When is the last time you did something for the first time? That is such an awesome question! It is one of those questions that really make you think? Think about what you are doing with your life.
I first heard that question a little over a year ago at the starting line of World’s Toughest Mudder 2014. World’s Toughest Mudder is an obstacle course I did. I bet you have probably heard of Tough Mudder before. There are tough mudder events held all over the world. Roughly 800,000 people participate in tough mudder obstacle courses during the year. At the end of the year a little bit less than 1% of those people decide they want a little bit bigger challenge, and they sign up for the World’s Toughest Mudder. World’s toughest mudder is an obstacle course just like any other tough mudder. The only difference is that you participate in it for 24 hours straight. 24 hours of obstacles, mud, water, fire, electrocution, 35’ cliff jumps…and whatever mother-nature has up her sleeves.
When I first decided that I was going to take on this beast, most people’s response sounded something like….
You’re going to do what? Really? Voluntarily? You’re going to pay for that? Are you Crazy?
Well I’ve actually done the event twice now. I first did the event in 2014. I suffered a few minor injuries and a little hypothermia, but I survived. After I got back home and had some time to reflect, I just couldn’t shake the feeling that I could of done better much better. So I went back and did again this year to redeem myself. I did much better this year, and came home proud of the result.
It may be harder to convince you now but trust me I’m not crazy. To help you understand why a sane person would put themselves through something as crazy as this, let me ask you another question…
If you had the chance to have a wish granted by a genie would you do it?
I think pretty much everyone’s initial response to that question is going to be heck yeah I would. Matter of fact, if my memory serves me right from watching Aladdin, if I find a genie I’m going to get 3 wishes. This question probably seems like a no brainer, but hear me out for a second and I bet I can change your answer.
Whatever goal you are striving for right now is going to feel amazing when you accomplish it because of all of the hard work and sacrifices that you are making right now! Reaching a mountain peak is exhilarating because of the climb! Do you think if you were just airlifted to the top it would still feel as rewarding? Probably not!
I’ve always believed that the bigger the challenge the bigger the reward, and whenever I take on an event like world’s toughest mudder, what it does is it raises the bar in my head of what I think I’m capable of! Then I have the confidence to reach for even higher things. Over the past year from when I competed in my first world’s toughest mudder to the second one, I have accomplished so many things! I have accomplished things that I wouldn’t have even thought of doing in the past. I ran a marathon. That’s right I said a marathon! Did you know I’m built like a linebacker? Linebackers don’t run marathons. Something like 5% of the world can say they’ve ran a marathon, and now I’m in that percentage. That still shocks me. I’m getting ready to publish my first book, and I just opened my own personal training studio. A lot of people accomplish goals like this. What is amazing to me is that I never imagined I would accomplish these things. These were not goals of mine a year ago.
One thing I have learned over the last 10 years working in fitness, is that anything can be accomplished if you want it bad enough. There is unfortunately one obstacle that everyone faces that has the power to stop us before we even start. It doesn’t matter where we live, how old we are, how much money we make, how healthy we are, or what are religious beliefs are. We all face this same obstacle that can easily defeat us if we allow it. It’s the size of our but! Some peoples’ buts are so big that it makes overcoming obstacles seem impossible.
Those people say things like:
I would exercise and eat right …but there is just not enough time to do it.
I could get my degree…but I’m not smart enough.
I would grow a bigger business…but it’s just too hard.
I’m talking about your “but” B-U-T.
You see I used to be someone who had a “but” for everything. I was afraid to take risks, or even step out of my comfort zone. Now I understand that outside my comfort zone is where life really begins. No one should ever let fear hold them back! Life is too short to wonder “what if”.
Now that I have successfully convinced you that I’m not crazy, I’d like to invite you to jump over to my side! I want to challenge you to first time something this weekend. When is the last time you did something for the first time?
